I get several questions from clients and potential clients about search engine optimization. What is it? How does it work? After a detailed explanation of SEO I usually see blank faces instead of exhilaration. As a result I have decided to use a couple of analogies to better explain the purpose of SEO.

Let´s pretend that your website is a giant billboard for a moment. This billboard has all of the bells and whistles and it is beautiful and makes you giggle on the inside. Okay. Maybe it´s just me. Now let´s imagine we put this billboard up in the Mojave Desert where absolutely no person can find it. Will that fancy website/billboard effectively bring traffic to you or your business? No way! This is so common among new website owners that it keeps me up at night. Shall we go back to the analogy? By deploying proven, solid SEO techniques you can place that bright, shiny billboard right in the middle of Time Square! (Time Square being the first page of Google). Think your business will thrive with a billboard in Time Square? You bet!

Okay. Are you still with me so far? No? Let´s try another one. For the sake of this lesson go ahead and pretend that you have an awesome classic muscle car on which you are advertising your business. This puppy has the custom license plates, window decals, and the works. This car will represent your website. The ad car now resides in your garage under a car cover. Unfortunately without implementing proper SEO tactics this is where your website will end up, at the bottom of the search engine results.
